Teej Festival of nepali hindu women where song and dance is essential!!!!!!!!!

Teej (Nepali: तीज) also known as Haritalika  Teej is a fasting festival for Hindu women. It takes place in 3rd day of Shukla Paksha in Bhadrapada or Bhadra month of  Nepali calendar and Hindu calendar, normally falls in the month of August or early September. Dedicated to the Goddess Parvati, commemorating her union with Lord Shiva, the festival is celebrated for marital bliss, well-being of spouse and children and purification of own body and soul. The festival is a three-day-long celebration that combines sumptuous feasts as well as rigid fasting. Teej have other importance as women create  new songs about recent happening and  throw shutire over  males specially who dominate over their husband and daughter in laws.

Preparations for the festival begin well in advance. Fabric stores, sarees and suit outlets are stocked with the bridal red color fabric. Women spend most of the time shopping when Teej is near. Women mainly shops for golden ornaments, new clothes specially red one, bangles etc. Teej gives women an opportunity to dress like the newly wed. They worship the epitome of divine marriage - Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, for longevity and prosperity for their husband and family.

 Teej in Nepal is celebrated in three days. The first day of Teej is called Dar Khane Din. On this day the women, both married and unmarried, gathered together in a place and dance in special folk songs called teej song and eat delicious foods. In remote areas the married women goes at her mother’s place and dance and eat there.

     The second or the fasting day of the Teej festival is dedicated to pujas and prayers. The holy Pashupatinath temple is thronged by women in red sarees to offer prayers to Lord Shiva. Women gather in the temple and circumambulate the Lingam (phallic symbol of the Lord) adorned with flowers, sweets and coins. The beautifully decorated idols of Shiva and Parvati are offered fruits and flowers to seek blessings of the divine spirits. Lighting of an oil lamp is very important part of the puja ceremony. It is said that the oil lamp should be kept lit all night to avoid bad omen.   

The third day of the Teej Festival is called Rishi Panchami. On this day, the seven sages of the Hindu pantheon are worshiped by women in a belief that it will cleanse all sins of the previous year. Womenfolk take a holy bath with red mud found on the roots of the sacred Datiwan bush, along with its leaves. After three hours of rigorous cleansing, they come out purified and absolved from all sins. After this they sit in a semicircle while a priest sitting in the middle chants devotional prayers.

Nepal to face the Sri Lankan Challenge in last match of AFC Challenge cup Qualifier Group-D

Nepal will come out at Dashrath Stadium eyeing nothing less than a win against Sri Lanka at the AFC Challenge Cup Group D qualifiers on Monday. Nothing less than a win will be enough for the home team to qualify. Both teams know each other well because they have played each other a number of times. In fact, on paper both teams are equally balanced though Sri Lankan have upper hand as they had won 7 among 11 match played between two teams. Nepal have 3 win in their favor while one was a draw. With Nepal a spot above Sri Lanka which is 173rd in the FIFA ranking there is not much difference.

However, Nepal’s recent performance has been promising and the team jubilant with victory against physically fit Afghanistan and a well fought 0-1 loss against North Korea has brought positive change to the team.

Sri Lankan, on the other hand, are yet to win a match as they lost their inaugural match against North Korea 0-4 and were humbled by Afghanistan 0-1.

According to Nepal’s English coach Graham Paul Roberts, his team will not settle for anything less than a win. “We can’t take chances as it is a big game which we have to win,” the Brit said, “But I am positive we will win as we have worked hard for the last ten weeks.”

With Anil Gurung and Jumanu Rai in the starting line up, Roberts is confident they will win the battle. Rohit Chand will also play his part. But Sagar Thapa’s twisted right ankle is a problem.

“I will decide on the team on Monday morning after looking at Thapa’s progress,” Roberts said, “If he is fit by then, that will be a boost for the team.”

A confident Roberts also urged local supporters to turn up to boost the morale of their team. “Come and chant for us and we will not disappoint you.” 

However Sri Lankan have nothing to lose, so they are not under pressure. Sri Lanka´s assistant coach Damodor Chandrashree is also not in the mood to give up. “We will do our best against Nepal,” he had said during a pre-tournament press conference.

With all four teams having played two matches each, defending champions DPR Korea, maintaining a 100 percent record, are atop the table with six points, while Nepal and Afghanistan share the second spot with three points each. Even Nepal and Afghanistan along with strong North Korea already had point in points table every team has chance to Qualify for the second round.

At Halchowk Stadium, Afghanistan will battle it against the group toppers North Korea on Monday. Afghanistan just like Nepal need but a win to qualify while North Korea are in a comfortable place with two wins from as many matches.

Hollywood actress Demi Moore was in Nepal for a week long trip to shoot documentry On Anuradha koirala CNN hero of the year!!!

Hollywood actress Demi Moore made a week trip to Nepal, and interacted at length with the media in Kathmandu.

She addressed the problem of human trafficking at a news conference organized by Maiti Nepal, a non-profit organization.

Maiti Nepal aims to protect Nepali girls and women from crimes like domestic violence, trafficking for flesh trade, child prostitution, child labour and various forms of exploitation.

Moore had arrived in Nepal on April 1 to work on CNN’s Freedom Project. She spent her week in Nepal shooting a documentary about 2010 CNN Hero Anuradha Koirala trying to deliver Koirala’s message against human trafficking. The shooting was done at rehabilitation centre of Maiti Nepal at Gaushala, transit homes at Bhairawa and Rasuwa.

Moore also urged everyone to unite and fight against human trafficking. “Real men don’t buy and sell girls. Real men love, care for and protect girls,” said Moore at the press meet.

Moore, who became one of the highest paid actress in Hollywood with her successes in the movies like Ghost, A Few Good Men, Indecent Proposal and Disclosure in the early 1990s, stressed on not giving much importance to her celebrity status. “Because Anuradha and I share the same commitment against human trafficking, I came to Nepal. I appreciate people’s fascination with celebrities but I am here as human being, not as celebrity.”

During her trip she also had an opportunity to meet Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal. “I was encouraged with his response as he committed to give priority to education,” revealed Moore who sees “lack of opportunity of education and poverty as the major reasons behind vulnerability of young girls towards human trafficking”.

On her association with Moore, Koirala said, “Moore introduced me to the world during the (CNN Hero) award ceremony. And we share a common interest to work against human trafficking.”

On the situation of human trafficking Moore said, “America and Nepal have the same problems. Despite being a global problem, it should be addressed specifically as per the country.” Moore returned on the evening of April 7.
